Hard Times and Liminal Spaces (Rated E)

Part 3 of Broken Wings, a human AU.

Crowley and Aziraphale from age 6 to adulthood. This explains a lot. E rating only applies to later chapters, which will be labeled with content warnings.

Or catch up:

Part 1 - In the End (Rated T)

After years of self-denial, Aziraphale longs for Crowley and struggles to accept the stagnant life he has made for himself in a small town in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Part 2 - The Philosopher (Rated T)

Crowley’s life didn’t turn out quite the way he expected either, but all in all, he’s pretty happy with it. But when he loses everything else that makes his life worth living, can he still turn to Aziraphale?

I keep seeing a post that’s like “it’s so sweet that Crowley cleaned up the bookshop while Aziraphale was in Edinburgh” and I’m like listen, I get what you mean but that is not what’s happening here, Aziraphale keeps his shop a mess on purpose to ward off customers and Crowley tries to alphabetize his CD collection to take his mind off the impending apocalypse but is thwarted by them already being alphabetized. That was stress cleaning and it was for Crowley’s benefit.

relevant bits from the book

WAIT A MINUTE. Gabriel is trying to alphabetize the bookshop by first letter of first sentence. Crowley stress alphabetizes. Are they going back and forth undoing each other’s work?

That’s what I think! He’s throwing stacks of books he pulled off Gabriel’s shelves in preparation to sort through them and do it properly later :D

Yes!! I’ve seen people saying he’s being purposely mean or angry or passive aggressive with the way he dumps the stacks of books, in order to punish Aziraphale for the whole Gabriel situation. But this rings like a much truer interpretation. Crowley has never been PURPOSELY mean to Aziraphale in 6000 years, he’s not starting now. He’s STRESSED, is what he is, and bizarrely Gabriel is providing him with an excellent coping mechanism as they go round in circles reorganising the whole place 😅💕

Do you think Aziraphale passed his driving test fair and square?

Or was there a few minor miracles involved?

neil-gaiman:

Watch this 1935 driving test video, which shows the test Aziraphale would have taken, and decide for yourself…

Update

Crowley’s chest heaved as he gasped for air.

“Crowley, what on earth?”

Crowley stuck a hand out in front of him, flat, as if he were bracing it against something—no. More as if he were trying to call for something to halt.

“If I asked you to come with me now, would you?”

“What? Why? Come with you where?”

“That’s just it. Don’t have time to explain. Will you come or not?”

Aziraphale blinked. Crowley fidgeted uncomfortably and opened his mouth as if he were about to tell Aziraphale he had missed his chance. Aziraphale did not want to miss his chance.
